Reports say that the Chiefs won't sign Chris Jones to a new deal until after the NFL Draft, even though Jones has made it clear that he wants to stay in Kansas City for a long time.
Given how many contract issues have gone wrong in the NFL, Kansas City shouldn't take a chance that the same thing will happen with Jones.
Last season, the star defensive end had 15.5 sacks, which was tied for his career high.
"I think this discussion, like many others, will have to wait until after the draft. I could still see the Chiefs adding a veteran receiver in the next couple of weeks,
there could be one or two more needs to be filled after the draft. All of these things can change how you would arrange a big deal like Jones's."
Even though the timing makes sense, Kansas City needs to make sure they're on the same page with Jones, a guy they've come to depend on over the last few seasons.
The only risk of waiting right now is how high the market could go, but it's possible that the Chiefs aren't too worried about that.
But the price for the best defensive tackles in the NFL will go up because Dexter Lawrence, Quinnen Williams, and Christian Wilkins are all up for contract extensions.
