It was Kipchoge's worst race since the 2020 London Marathon, when he came in ninth.
Eliud Kipchoge didn't win a marathon for only the third time in his long and successful career.
The world record leader, Kipchoge, who is 38 years old, came in sixth at the Boston Marathon in 2023.
He crossed the finish line in 2:09:23, which was the slowest time of his career, even though it was still very fast by almost any standard.
Kipchoge led the top men's runners at the front of the race for the first 17 miles and seemed to be in charge.
Kipchoge has won multiple times at both the Berlin and London marathons. He has also won in Chicago and Tokyo.
